How's that working out?
A casual look at things in our society today reveals a pretty poor state of affairs on so many levels. Today’s “Dear Amy” advice column features a letter under headline “Couple need to figure out how to communicate.” George is 32 and Isabel is 29 they are not married and have been together for 12 years. They have 16-month-old daughter together. George was proud of the fact that they never argued then realized that it was because they didn’t communicate. He is ready to be married and they have had counseling which didn’t help. He is writing to Amy as a last hope before he ends the “relationship.” Amy writes that communication is everything and that George should consider his communication style.
Again in today’s paper under this headline “Not-guilty plea in Slaying” 35-year old woman named Rebecca Kerr stabbed her 32-year old boyfriend to death inside their northwest Fresno apartment. She claims that her boyfriend Michael Grimaldo was beating her and had thrown her down a flight of stairs cornering her in the kitchen where she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him once in the chest. The 5’ 11” 215 pound Grimaldi has long criminal history with arrests for domestic violence, drug possession, and assault with a deadly weapon was much bigger and stronger than the 5’ 130 pound Kerr. Kerr’s two teenaged children were at home when the assault occurred.
This is just one day in an average American town. So I ask the question how’s that working out. I grew up in the late fifties and was already married during the hippy revolution of free love. I missed the drug culture of that period because I was busy raising children. That time was not really the beginning of anything, the permissive let it all hang out attitude was already well established. The family structure was already crumbling with Dr. Spock advocating little external discipline for children. The good doctor admitted that he was wrong before his death.
The question is; is man just a highly evolved animal with opposing thumbs subject to animal impulses to have sex when ever and where ever he can? Or is man created in the image of God for a specific purpose endowed with skills and free will? The argument about these choices has been going on since men started talking. Proponents on neither side can prove the truth with certainty. The argument really begins at the root of how we got here and even how “here” came to be. One side holds the position that God spoke the universe into existence and created everything that is created as is described in the Holy Bible. The other side maintains that there is no god and the universe just exists by some accident in time. Part of the second argument is that man is animal that has evolved from some lower life form. I am not going to debate either side here.
It is my purpose to examine what is working for the society of man in a very brief manner. So what do we know? Man walks upright, has opposable thumbs, has verbal communication, has emotions, is capable of abstract thought, and will kill for the sake of killing. In some respects man is not really a very noble creation. What I want to consider in this discussion is what works in an ordered society of men. You may get all excited about my use of the word man and may as well tune out now if you are looking for any “politically” correct terminology.
Groups of men have always had rules for the way they live life together. Even in “uncivilized” groups there are rules. My question is what really works for society? Is it good to have men and women, women and women, men and men having unrestricted sexual relations? How is society served by a model that encourages what is at the very least considered permissive if not promiscuous sexual behavior? Is it good for the individuals involved? If you want to ignore the possibility of a God ordered system then it seems that you should have a better plan. So is the plan to let individuals do what ever feels good to them when ever it feels good with whomever it feels good? Men in general seem to be driven more by their sexual urges than women so should they just be governed by their urges? What about preservation of the species? Certainly in an unrestricted and sexually permissive culture there will be babies. Who will care for, nurture and train these children? What happens when man with man and woman with woman relationships flourish? How will there be children? Of course you may say this is ludicrous the situation isn’t that way at all. Isn’t it?
Now consider mind altering drugs. Should drugs be regulated or should everybody have free access to whatever drug they may desire? There are many in our world today who advocate this under the guise of not interfering with a person’s freedom of expression. Look at the facts, drug use does appear to be progressive. People who work in the field will tell you that for the user there is never an equal for the “first” high with a particular drug. So no matter what, a person using drugs will always be dissatisfied with their experience. I am not sure that any drug is benign in its effect on the person. To be sure there are people who do not seem to be affected negatively by drug use. I suspect that this actually an illusion. In the long run there are always negative effects. Who am I to say what some one else should or should not do? No one.
There is more that I want to say and I will stop here for now. I would like to hear your thoughts on what I have said so far. Am I nuts? Maybe you don’t believe we have any problems? Maybe you don’t think that what I have brought up are problems?
My major question is does the world system as it is today really function for the betterment of man?
