A Sojourner
I am a sojourner in this world, I am not of this world. I am on a journey of discovery.
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
Matthew 24:36-44 Holy Bible NIV.
What is my role as a sojourner in this world? I don’t know when I will be called home to be with God and I don’t know when Jesus Christ will return for the final judgment. What should I be doing when Christ returns? Should I be working for world peace? Should I be feeding the poor? Should I be working to clothe and house widows and orphans? Should I be building a large house, a mansion and filling the rooms with treasures of this world? Does God “need” me to accomplish his purposes? God doesn’t need me to do anything; He is the creator of the world. In truth He will use me as I allow Him by my obedience to His will to accomplish His perfection in this world. As a sojourner I don’t nest, I don’t set up house keeping, I am a temporary visitor. Can the world be a better place because I visited, because I passed this way? Perhaps as I am able to share God’s word with those souls that God causes me to interact with? Is it more important for me to speak or to listen? You might say how can I share God’s word if I don’t speak? Is it possible that listening to people talk about what troubles them, what is important to them they will learn that I care about their lives and by the fact that I care they may learn that God cares about them. Do the people that God puts in my path need to be told that they are sinners in need of salvation? I wonder?
So then the question comes, what should I be doing when Jesus Christ comes on the Day of Judgment? Should I be in church praying? Should I be at the baseball game? Should I be at my “job?” Should I be standing on a corner exhorting passers by to repent and accept Jesus Christ? Should I be in a bar drinking beer with my friends? Perhaps the better question to ask is when I consider an activity would be; “is this what I want to be doing when Jesus comes?” Many people have said that the good question to ask is; “what would Jesus do?” The answer is that I rarely do what Jesus would do because I am still in this world and sadly still so very much part of this world.
