Let There Be Light
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. Genesis 1:3-5 NIV Holy Bible.
Have you ever really thought about these verses? God simply spoke and there was light, there has been light ever since. What good is light? Mostly we just take light for granted, the sun shines, the trees and plants grow, we have food to eat, we have warmth during the day, warmth at night because we burn fuel, and next day there is the sun again. Early scientists had an understanding of light, they thought that light was a wave form and divided visible light with a prism into different colors. Then some other scientists said light is particles and has different behavior. What does all of this mean to you and me? We think that we see colors, we photograph color images first with film now digitally. Do we really understand light, perhaps not? Scientists are constantly trying to understand how the universe began, where does life come from and how is it created? “And God said, ‘Let there be light,..” It seems a little too simple perhaps.
If we choose to believe that the creator of the universe simply spoke and there was light then possibly the sovereign God could speak and there would be darkness just as easily. Where would man be then? Years ago when I got involved with photography I built a darkroom and it was extremely difficult to keep light out. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-15 NIV Holy Bible. What is the quality of my light, what is the quality of your light? Are we providing light in the darkness so others can see the path? Are we helping people see the truth that will set them free? I must ask myself if the way I live my life builds folks up or does it tear them down? Why are we the light? Jesus also said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 NIV Holy Bible. So perhaps this is why we are the light? Even though few will find the gate it seems obvious that God wants all to come to Him. Every one has a choice, I have made mine. I choose Christ, I choose life, will you?
