Food for thought about the Marriage Amendment

There are so many things going on in the world today that make it very difficult to stay focused on God’s call on our lives as followers of Jesus Christ. “18 Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” The Holy Bible: New International Version, electronic ed., Matthew 28:18-20 (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1996, c1984). I wonder if Jesus intended that we should try to force the truth of the gospel into the minds of unbelievers. I am reminded of God speaking to us in Ephesians 6:12 saying “12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” I believe that the enemy loves to see believers in disarray and divided. When Satan can get believers to argue over this doctrine or that doctrine instead of spending our time sharing the love and grace of God he wins a victory. How many churches have been destroyed in this manner when some decide that the preacher is wrong in the presentation of the gospel, doesn’t do baptism correctly, or accepts the wrong kind of person into fellowship (different color or ethnic background)? It would seem that many of us believers do not invest enough time studying the Word of God (the Holy Bible) to be able to recognize false teaching when it is presented. “11 My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Peter; still another, “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.”  The Holy Bible: New International Version, electronic ed., 1 Co 1:11-15 (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1996, c1984).

The voters in California are going to polls in November to decide if marriage should only be defined as between one man and one woman. No matter what is decided God will recognize the union between man and woman that he created as marriage. God is sovereign and our vote will not change His ordinance. Does it make sense for believers to spend millions of dollars and thousands of man hours to fight for the passage of this constitutional amendment? I believe that as believers we should stand up for what we believe is right. I challenge all believers to unite in prayer and trust God for the outcome. There would be unbelievable power in our testimony if the members of every Bible believing church would commit to one 24 hour day of fasting and prayer each week. The campaign would include people of California and around the world united under the banner of Jesus Christ. We spend no money on television, radio, newspaper, or billboard advertising to reach the unbelieving public letting the opposition do all of the spending. We should redouble our evangelistic efforts both with our time and our other God given resources. We would not engage in public debates with unbelievers about the amendment. What if there was a war with only one combatant? What if we allowed the opponents to spend their millions in the futile effort to defeat God’s law? What is proven if we out spend the opposition and the amendment passes? Let us fast, pray, and trust God. How sweet the victory for God? Give glory to God in the highest.

Okay, call me naïve. Just think about it while you are sending jokes to your friends. Please pray that this idea could become viral and spread though out our community of believers in Jesus Christ.
